Arminda K My assumption is that on Saturday, Florent Ghys and the Bonjour crew rested, because the rest of the days on this album are really superb. Favorite track: Tuesday Noon around 12:21.

Murphy Adams This album is so. Fun. I love Florent's sense of lightheartedness mixed with his pure skill for layering and complexity. Will definitely be listening regularly!
Favorite track: Wednesday.

Mohan Thomas Just sublime! I can't believe I have only just discovered Florent Ghys. Such a unique - but distinct - compositional voice that makes this unusual instrumentation seem like it ought to be ubiquitous. The music is everything from playful to meditative to urgent to surreal. It's cerebral but it makes sense, and it moves you. The description is right: 'equal parts groove, melody and meditation'.

This is one of my all time favourite albums.

AJ Santillan Florent's band rules. There's a lot of creativity with the rhythmic material and I love the low end ensemble sound. Favorite track: Friday 3pm.

bær Florent Ghys always consistently delivers creative rhythmic invention in his composition. After the cyborg-bass album Télévision, it's great to hear the acoustic parallels in his notated compositions here in Bonjour. Favorite track: Tuesday Noon around 12:21.

Olga Kivius I've already lost my hope to see this amazing album of the chamber ensemble "Bonjour" leaded by contrabassist Florent Ghys officially released. It was made 3 years ago. And what was my surprise!
I find it as one of his best works, made in the flavor of classical modern minimalism with the influence of rock and experimental avant-garde music, that actually is very suitable to the label Cantaloupe Music )

about

Bonjour is a low string band with drums/percussion founded in 2012 by bassist and composer Florent Ghys. Combining basses, cello, guitars, drumkit, pitched percussion, melodica, and voices, Ghys creates music that easily slides across genre barriers, bringing the listener into an unusual sound world that’s equal parts groove, melody and meditation.

In the wake of Ghys’ beloved Cantaloupe release Télévision — a Dada-esque exploration of alto double bass meshed with layers of found sounds, processed vocals and a sci-fi sensibility — Bonjour’s self-titled debut is more directly performance-based, but no less compelling for its overall sound. From the jazz-laced, indie-pop lilt of “Thursday Afternoon” to the woozy, off-kilter mood of “Tuesday Noon Around 12:21,” the album shimmers with influences that push it beyond the safety net of “new classical” music to something altogether edgy, adventurous, and even slightly art-damaged.

Ever-curious and always engaging, Ghys has lately taken a keen interest in composing for small ensemble; his piece “An Open Cage,” composed for the Bang on a Can All-Stars’ Field Recordings, comes to mind. With Bonjour, he has found the perfect group of musicians to allow his imagination to run wild.
